Artificial Intelligence and research integrity: enabling trust and innovation

Welcome to our project dedicated to exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and research integrity. Our objective is to work with the research sector to identify how integrity can be embedded where AI is used in research, and the support and guidance that is needed to ensure that the benefits of AI can be realised whilst trust in research is maintained.

This page will provide updates and resources that will help the research community navigate the evolving landscape of generative AI whilst maintaining the principles of integrity.

Project overview

In our 2024 annual statement (pdf), we published what we saw as emerging themes and related questions for the research community. Since then, the Committee has engaged with a wide range of stakeholders via correspondence and meetings to further 7 key themes (pdf). For a citeable version of these 7 key themes, please see Zenodo.

Following the publication of the refreshed Concordat to Support Research Integrity (pdf), we also provide a perspective, with a focus on researchers, on the impact of Generative AI (GenAI) on the five principles of Research Integrity contained in the Concordat. The refreshed Concordat affirms the Committee’s belief that the principles of research integrity maintain their value when GenAI is used as part of the research process. Further to this, we have prepared a summary that highlights the key considerations the research community should take into account regarding research integrity when using GenAI.

Next steps

Our next steps will be to engage further across the sector at events around the UK, engaging across academia and government stakeholders. We will post occasional updates but in the meantime, please get in touch at secretariat@ukcori.org if you have any points you would like us to consider. We will deliver a full set of recommendations in 2025.
